Celebrating Women’s History Month at PMI

We’re shining a spotlight on our incredible Property Administrative Assistant, who goes above and beyond every day to keep our Normandy Apartments office running smoothly. Meet Karen Byrd, who is the backbone of our operation, from scheduling meetings to managing files and assisting our team.

Karen’s biggest advice for women entering the Property Management field is “be flexible, intuitive, and think outside the box.” Read more to see who mentored Karen throughout her journey in life.

What advice do you have for women entering the property management/field?

My advice to give a woman entering the Property Management Field is you must be flexible, intuitive, and think outside the box: have good communication and the need to balance empathy with assertiveness, all while remaining professional and positive. The tool I found very helpful is knowing how to read people—focusing on the details, being organized, and staying up to date on the most current policies and procedures.

The property management industry is ever-changing and provides plenty of opportunities for improvement.

Who mentored you to get you to where you are in your career or life?

I have a few mentors, my parents, who taught me hard work, dedication, and ethics. Shawn Babowicz, my previous property manager for seven years at Normandy Apartments, taught me how to schedule my time wisely and encouraged me to be confident in the skills I bring and recognize the value they inherently bring.

I take pride in knowing the importance of women seeing women in positions they want to hold.
